Easy is Everything

We’ve all seen the situation:

Person 1 has an idea for a new feature, and Person 2 points out that technically it’s already possible.

Pretty much anything we imagine is possible. It’s possible to go to the moon, split an atom, and run a marathon. The question isn’t whether or not it’s possible to do something. It’s how easy it is to do.

Before Craigslist, it was possible to post a classified ad on the internet. Before Facebook, it was possible to put pictures on the internet. Before Blogger, it was possible to start a weblog.

But very few people did it. They didn’t have the right encouragement, examples to follow, tech to make it easy, or community to join. There’s a million tiny obstacles that cause psychological friction, and the job of a product is to systematically take them down so its users can get the benefits of using it with as little pain as possible.

Don’t think in black and white possibilities, think in shades of grey.
